ACCEPTABLE USE OF COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY

General Principles:

Friends’ Central School students use computer facilities on campus to support learning and research and for communication and collaboration. Use of FCS computers and network privileges, including connection to the Internet, requires responsible behavior. Acceptable use must be ethical, legal and considerate. Students must respect the work of others, respect shared resources and observe individual rights to privacy and to freedom from harassment.

FCS students should:

• Use resources only for academic or authorized administrative purposes.

• Protect passwords from unauthorized use. A student is directly responsible for all account activity.

• Access only information that is his/her own, is publicly available, or to which he/she has been given access.

• Use only legal versions of copyrighted software.

• Be considerate of others; avoid monopolizing computers or overusing data storage or printers.

• Use personal e-mail moderately and responsibly.

• Use their school-assigned email address in conjunction with web sites and services that are considered appropriate based on the terms of the Acceptable Use Policy.

FCS students should not:

• Use or attempt to decode another person’s password or files, or otherwise seek to circumvent or subvert system or network security measures.

• Attempt to harm, disable or remove data, devices or configurations.

• Download or play computer games except with faculty approval.

• Use system for gambling, selling, shopping, mass mailing, political purposes, or chain letters.

• View, obtain or distribute suggestive, pornographic or violent material.

• Use mail or messaging services to harass or intimidate another person.

• Use profanities or inappropriate language.

• Use the Friends' Central logo, seal, or any variation thereof, in any publication, either electronically or in print, without the express written consent of the School.

• Access discussion or communication-based web sites (e.g. discussion boards, blogs, chat rooms, and the like) while on Friends' Central's campus, unless it is directly correlated with a school program and they have been given permission to do so by a member of the faculty and staff. Examples of prohibited sites include, but are not limited to, facebook.com, myspace.com, and xanga.com, in addition to any sites that enable students to participate in live discussion or to post material.

• Create an online account of any kind on behalf of another person.

• Impersonate another person online. This includes, but is not limited to, logging into an Internet-based account as another person, posting material in the name of another person in an Internet-based environment, and changing settings in another person's Internet-based account.

Enforcement:

FCS reserves the right to examine any files, e-mail messages, logs or other media residing on the School network facilities or any publicly accessible web site for purposes of enforcement of this policy.

Unacceptable use of Friends’ Central School’s computer facilities undermines our community and its mission. Violations of this policy will have serious consequences, possibly including the loss of network access privileges and/or suspension or expulsion. Parents are advised to consider these guidelines for their children’s computer use at home.
